Getaway is Australia’s favourite travel show with wonderful holiday ideas for all tastes and budgets as well as those once in a lifetime, dream destinations. Getaway airs Saturdays 5.30pm on Channel 9.
Sri Lanka is often referred to as the ‘Teardrop of India’ due to its shape and proximity to its larger neighbour, however Sri Lanka boasts a unique and distinct culture of its own. Catriona was keen to get out amongst it all, and with around 1.2 million tuk tuks in Sri Lanka, it seemed like the obvious
mode of transport! The three-wheeled vehicles are the perfect way to navigate the busy Colombo streets, and the Tuk Tuk Safari tour whisked Catriona into the heart of the city, where she could wave at locals and soak in the sights, sounds and smells!
In the Pettah neighbourhood, each street is a bustling market specialising in different products, from electronics to clothing, gold, fresh produce and knick knacks. It was a sensory overload in the best possible way! In the middle of it all, the 120 year old Red Mosque stands out with its bright red and pale yellow striped facade. Spices are a huge part of Sri Lankan cuisine, and the earthy aromas from the spice market filled the warm air from a block away! Catriona visited one of the vendors selling red
chilies, pepper, cardamom and the ‘Rolls Royce’ of spices, cinnamon! She even tasted a piece!
Of course, the best way to sample those incredible spices was in a delicious curry. Catriona’s friendly driver took her to Curry Pot to try a traditional lentil curry, coconut sambol, rice, and whole fried fish!
She learnt the proper eating etiquette of keeping your left hand behind the plate, using only the fingers of your right hand to mix and eat, and never put food in the palm of your hand!
With around 70 percent of the population being Buddhist, it was only fitting to finish the day at a place of serenity. The Gangaramaya Buddhist Temple is one of Colombo’s most famous and important temples. During a moment of peace amidst the hustle and bustle of the city, Catriona offered a blue
water lily, the national flower of Sri Lanka, to Buddha as a gesture of gratitude. Sri Lanka is a vibrant and colourful blend of traditions, people and experiences. The Tuk Tuk Safari was a fun-filled, off-the-beaten-tourist-track adventure, showcasing the real and rustic side of Sri Lanka.
